Earthquake - magnitude vs intensity

INFOGRAPHIC: Earthquake magnitude vs intensity
July 31, 2016
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the agency tasked to mitigate disasters that may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic phenomena, uses two terms when reporting about quakes: magnitude and intensity.
But what is the difference between the two?

What is the difference between Magnitude and Intensity?

In an example, Magnitude can be likened to the power of radio or television waves sent out from a broadcasting station. Intensity is how well you receive the signal, which can depend on your distance from the energy source, the local conditions, and the pathway the signal has to take to reach you.

Preparing For a Power Failure

Electricity is a relatively recent luxury that first emerged in the 19th century. Since then, however, it has become an essential part of modern society, and a major contributor to not only everyone's standard of living, but also their good health. Electrical service is vulnerable to interruptions not only by overloaded power grids, but also by natural disasters such as blizzards, tornadoes or hurricanes. Power outages are more than mere nuisances that can deprive people of access to computers and household lighting. They can lead to the spoiling of food supplies, the reduction of hospital services, and disrupt communications. Outages are highly unpredictable and because of this, it is necessary for people to know not only how to cope with them, but also how to prepare in advance.
